CBR to CBZ – Two Steps, Really
Drop the CBR
That comic you downloaded last week. We'll take it.
Click Convert
We unpack the RAR, repack as ZIP, rename to .cbz. Done.
Download CBZ
Now it opens on your iPad. Or your phone. Whatever.
Read
That's it. Go read your comic.
Why CBR Files Are a Pain (And CBZ Fixes It)
CBR is just a RAR file with a different name. RAR is a WinRAR thing, mostly Windows. You know what doesn't open RAR files natively? Your Mac. Your iPad. Your Android phone. Your cousin's Chromebook. Every time someone downloads a CBR comic and tries to open it on anything that isn't a Windows PC, they get that "can't open file" error and just give up.
CBZ is a ZIP file. Every operating system made in the last 20 years knows what to do with a ZIP file. Open it, read the images in order, close it. Comic readers like YACReader, Chunky Comic, ComicScreen – they all prefer CBZ. It's not that CBR is bad. It's just old, proprietary, and stuck in the Windows 98 era.
So I made this converter. You drag your CBR in, I take the images out, stuff them into a ZIP, rename it .cbz. The images stay the same. The order stays the same. The file size stays almost the same. The only difference is now it works everywhere. No sign-up, no waiting for an email, no "premium conversion" upsell. Just a comic that finally opens where you want to read it.
One thing though – big files. Comics with 200+ pages can hit 150MB, 200MB. The limit here is 200MB. If your file's bigger, it's probably a whole omnibus. Might want to split it first. Working on raising that limit.
Comic Converter Questions (Real Ones)
Nope. We extract the pages in whatever order they're stored in the CBR, and pack them the same way. If the original creator named the files "001.jpg, 002.jpg" etc., it stays that way. We don't alphabetize, we don't guess. Page 1 stays page 1.
No compression. The images come out exactly as they went in. Same resolution, same JPG quality, same color. We're just moving boxes, not re-drawing anything.
This page is CBR to CBZ. But I made a CBZ to CBR tool too. Check the tools directory if you really need to go backwards for some reason.
RAR and ZIP use different compression math. Sometimes ZIP is slightly bigger, sometimes smaller. Usually within 5%. Nothing's wrong – that's just how the algorithms differ.
