Why I Use 7Z for Archiving

Look, ZIP is fine. It's everywhere. But when I'm storing something long-term – old project files, a backup of photos, installation setups – I want the smallest file possible. That's 7Z. It compresses way better than ZIP. Sometimes I cut the file size in half compared to ZIP. The downside? Not everyone has 7-Zip installed. But that's okay. This tool works both ways: you can convert your ZIP to 7Z for storage, and if you need to send it to someone, convert it back. I made this because I was tired of downloading 7-Zip on every new computer just to open my own archives. Now I just do it in the browser.

Is 7Z Really That Much Smaller Than RAR or ZIP?

Depends on what you're compressing. Text files, code, documents – yes, 7Z usually beats both ZIP and RAR. Photos and videos that are already compressed? You won't see much difference. But for mixed file types, 7Z is the king of compression. If you're uploading to cloud storage or sending via email, that extra compression saves time and space. This converter lets you take an existing RAR or ZIP and squeeze it down to 7Z without reinstalling anything.

Converting RAR to 7Z – Does It Keep Everything?

Yep. Lossless. We unpack your RAR, grab all the files inside, and pack them into a fresh 7Z archive. Folder structure stays intact. File names stay intact. Nothing gets compressed twice in a weird way. It's a clean conversion.

7Z Converter Questions

Yes, to open a 7Z file on your computer, you usually need 7-Zip or WinRAR. But if you're just storing it, that's fine. If you need to open it, you can always convert it back to ZIP here.

Because it's doing more work. 7Z uses stronger compression algorithms. It's like packing a suitcase tightly vs. just throwing things in. Takes longer, but you get more space.

Not at the moment. We don't support password-protected archives. You'd need to remove the password first.

Ultra uses maximum compression settings. It's slower, but the file is as small as possible. Normal mode is faster and still much smaller than ZIP.
